GIF and animated WebP/PNG also open, as a static frame (the first one — motion isn’t kept). TIFF opens using a small local decoder. ICO opens when its largest image is stored as PNG, which is true of most modern icon files. HEIC/HEIF (the usual iPhone photo format) opens in Safari; other browsers don’t yet support decoding it locally.
About this tool
A local model finds the main subject and produces a soft transparency mask around it, which becomes the alpha channel of a PNG. It works best on a clear subject against a reasonably distinct background; fine detail like loose hair or fur may still need manual touch-up.
The model and the code that runs it both download once, the first time you use this — after that, it runs entirely on your device, with nothing uploaded.
